a) Disease groups are based on chapters of ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, tenth revision).
b) COVID-19 excludes long-Covid.
c) Neoplasms: malignant tumours (cancer) and benign tumours (ICD-10 codes C00-D48)
b) Symptoms: symptoms, abnormal clinical findings and laboratory results, not elsewhere classified (ICD-10 codes R00-R99)
Highest burden of disease due to mental disorders and neoplasms
The highest burden of disease and is attributable to mental disorders, neoplasms, disorders of the musculoskeletal system and cardiovascular diseases. The DALY (Disability Adjusted Life Years. Maat voor ziektelast ('burden of disease') in een populatie; opgebouwd uit het aantal verloren levensjaren (door vroegtijdige sterfte), en het aantal jaren geleefd met gezondheidsproblemen (bijvoorbeeld een ziekte), gewogen voor de ernst hiervan (ziektejaarequivalenten).) is a composite measure of health loss and is made up of two components: the years lost due to premature death (years of life lost; YLL (Year(s) of life lost)) and the years lost due to disability (YLD (Year(s) lived with disability)).
- Neoplasms are responsible for the largest loss of life years due to premature death (YLL), followed at some distance by cardiovascular disease.
- Mental disorders and disorders of the musculoskeletal system account for the greatest loss of years due to disability (YLD).
Bipolar and depressive mood disorders cause highest disease burden
From a selection of 79 conditions for which the burden of disease Bipolar and depressive mood disorders, COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (Chronische obstructieve longziekten)) (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), coronary heart disease and anxiety, compulsive and stress disorders cause the highest burden of disease in DALYs in the Netherlands.
- Lung cancer, dementia, coronary heart disease and stroke cause a relatively high number of years of life lost due to premature death (YLL (Year(s) of life lost)).
- Bipolar and depressive mood disorders, anxiety disorders, neck and back pain and COPD cause a relatively large loss of years lost due to disability.
