Number of years lost due to disability (YLD) increases with age

The number of years lost due to disability (YLD Year(s) lived with disability (Year(s) lived with disability)) increases sharply with age. In absolute terms, however, most YLDs are attributable to the 15-64 age group (graph in the first tab). The reason is that the group of 15 to 64-year-olds is largest in size. When corrected for the size of the age groups, by showing the number of year-olds per 1,000 people, a different picture emerges. The YLDs then increases sharply with age (graph in the second tab).

a) The grouping of disease is based on the classification into chapters of the ICD-10 International Classification of Diseases, tenth revision (International Classification of Diseases, tenth revision)
b) COVID-19 excludes long-Covid
c) Neoplasms: malignant tumours (cancer) and benign tumours (ICD-10 codes C00-D48)
b) Symptoms: symptoms, abnormal clinical findings and laboratory results, not elsewhere classified (ICD-10 codes R00-R99)

Contribution of disease groups to YLDs differs per stage of life

In 0- to 14-year-olds, Perinatal Period Disorders account for the most years lost due to disability (YLD Year(s) lived with disability (Year(s) lived with disability)). In the age group 15 to 64 years, a relatively large number of YLDs can be attributed to mental, behavioural and musculoskeletal disorders. In the age group 65 years and older, musculoskeletal disorders account for the majority of YLDS, followed by cardiovascular disease.
