Number of years of life lost increases with age
The number of years of life lost increases with age. This is both the case for the absolute number (graph in the first tab), and the relative number (number per 1,000 people; graph in the second tab). The number of years of life lost is small in the age group of 0 to 14 years. The reason is that relatively few children die.

a) The grouping of disease is based on the classification into chapters of the ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, tenth revision).
b) COVID-19 excludes long-Covid.
c) Neoplasms: malignant tumours (cancer) and benign tumours (ICD-10 codes C00-D48)
b) Symptoms: symptoms, abnormal clinical findings and laboratory results, not elsewhere classified (ICD-10 codes R00-R99)
Perinatal disorders responsible for most years of life lost in children
In 0- to 14-year-olds, the years of life lost (YLL (Year(s) of life lost)) are largely determined by disorders of the perinatal period and congenital abnormalities. Among 15 to 64-year-olds and over-65s, neoplasms (malignant tumours (cancer) and benign tumours) are responsible for most YLLs. In the age group 65 years and older, a relatively large number of years of life are lost as a result of neoplasms and cardiovascular diseases.
