The burden of disease increases with age
The absolute burden of disease increases with age (graph in the first tab). When corrected for the size of the age groups, by showing the total number of DALYs per 1,000 persons, a slightly different picture emerges. The number of DALYs per 1,000 people is about the same for the first two age groups, but increases sharply in the age group 65 years and older.

a) The grouping of disease is based on the classification into chapters of the ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, tenth revision)
b) COVID-19 excludes long-Covid
c) Neoplasms: malignant tumours (cancer) and benign tumours (ICD-10 codes C00-D48)
b) Symptoms: symptoms, abnormal clinical findings and laboratory results, not elsewhere classified (ICD-10 codes R00-R99)
Perinatal conditions responsible for the highest burden of disease in children
In 0 to 14-year-olds, the burden of disease is largely determined by disorders of the perinatal period. Among 15 to 64-year-olds, mental disorders are responsible for the most burden of disease. In the age group of 65 years and older, a relatively large number of years of life are lost as a result of neoplasms, cardiovascular diseases and the musculoskeletal diseases.
